What the standard helps organize

Why “just place fans” is not a complete plan
Air movers can increase evaporation, but the released moisture must be removed from the air. Water category describes the level of contamination associated with a water loss. It is different from the amount of water present and different from the drying “class” of the loss. A small sewage backup can present greater health concerns than a large clean-water supply-line leak.
Category 1: initially sanitary source
Examples may include a clean supply line or certain rainwater conditions before contamination occurs. Category 1 does not mean every material must be saved. Materials can still require removal because they are damaged, inaccessible, delaminated, structurally affected, or unable to dry.
Category 2: significantly contaminated water
This category can include water with enough biological, chemical, or physical contamination to cause discomfort or illness if contacted or consumed. Examples vary by source and conditions. Cleaning and material decisions become more conservative, especially for porous materials.
Category 3: grossly contaminated water
Sewage, certain floodwater, and other heavily contaminated sources require strict safety controls. Porous materials commonly require removal rather than simple drying. Unity addresses these conditions through biohazard cleaning and coordinated restoration services.

Dehumidification removes released moisture

- Can moisture escape from below, above, or through a specialty mat system?
- Are boards cupping, crowning, buckling, delaminating, or separating from adhesive?
Why the top surface can be misleading
A moisture meter may show elevated readings in the boards while the deeper issue is wet underlayment, adhesive, gypcrete, concrete, or subfloor. Air moving across the room may not effectively reach those layers. Specialty floor-drying systems can help in appropriate clean-water situations, but they are not a substitute for evaluating contamination and assembly failure.
Do not rush refinishing
Wood can change shape as moisture redistributes. Sanding too early may create a crowned surface later. Final cosmetic decisions should wait until moisture is stable and the flooring contractor can assess condition.
